Birth: 1924
Death: Nov. 19, 2010

Frank Gilhooley, the longtime former announcer for Mud Hens games and a former television sportscaster, died Friday.

Mr. Gilhooley was staying in Hospice of Northwest Ohio in Perrysburg. He was 86.

Mr. Gilhooley broadcast his first Toledo baseball game in 1953. He continued until May of this year. He was sports director for WTVG-TV, Channel 13, for many years, until 1986.

The Mud Hens celebrated "Frank Gilhooley Day" at Fifth Third Field downtown May 16.

Mr. Gilhooley teamed with Jim Weber to broadcast Mud Hens home games on a daily basis from 1986 to 2007. He also broadcast games for the Toledo Sox of the American Association in the 1950s and he was the sports director at WTVG Channel 13.

Mr. Gilhooley was a 1942 graduate of Central Catholic High School, and he played baseball and basketball at the University of Notre Dame.

The voice generations of Toledoans have grown to know and love has been silenced.

Frank was a sportscaster for sure, but he was a Toledo guy first and foremost. He was the voice of the 1953 Toledo Sox that won a pennant.

Frank remembered his early days as being "a little scary cause I never spoke in a microphone in my life. It was an on the job training. It worked out very well. I'll never forget that. I can remember things that happened that year, like they happened yesterday,"

Long associated with the Mud Hens, Frank's local broadcasting career reached well beyond the booth. The longtime sports anchor at Channel 13 was part of our family.

Frank had a knack for making everything seem big time. Most would say he was everything that was right about sports in Toledo.

This spring, in recognition of his 60 years with the Toledo Mud Hens, Frank was given the "Spirit of the International League" award at "Frank Gilhooley Day" during a pregame ceremony. It was a high point in a difficult year filled with health problems and the loss of his beloved wife of 56 years, Lydia.

As sure as the final out in any ball game, all good things and all good lives come to an end. We'll miss you, Frank!
