Two Killed In Crash At Winona

Two men were killed in a head-on collision on Highway 51 about three miles South of Winona this morning about 6:30 and four other men were admitted to the Tyler Holmes Memorial Hospital in Winona for treatment.

Investigating officers said that a car occupied by Johnson Cook, about 42, Steven Downs, 60, Alf Collins, 60, and Avery Peeler, also 60, all of Vaiden and a feed truck driven by Travis O. Evans of Morton hit head on. The car then side-swiped a truck owned by Complete Auto Transit Incorporated driven by Billy Bassham of Jackson who was traveling behind the Evans truck. The truck driven by Evans ran off into a creek and Evans was pinned under the cab. The other truck hit the bridge abutment.

Killed in the accident were Cook and Downs, Bassham was treated for a knee injury and released. Collins, Peeler, and Evans are still in the hospital, said authorities.

[NOTE: The ages of the victims listed in the above newspaper article are incorrect: Downs was 50 y., 5 m., 16 d. old; Collins was 50 y., 8 m., 1 d. old; Peeler was 50 y., 1 m., 3 d. old; and Cooke was 42 y., 4 m., 11 d. old at the time of the accident.]
