My Mother. It has been nine years since cancer stole her from us and not a day goes by that she is not missed. Mom had three children; Patti Jo, Eddie Louis and me, Michelle Diane. She was born to a poor family and struggled with her siblings and her mother to survive, especially after her father left the family. She kept that spirit and raised the three of us mostly on her own. She never had much, but worked hard all of her life and raised us to be independent and strong. She fought cancer with grace and was more worried about her children and grandchildren since she was content with all that she had accomplished. She fought to live after surgery to remove a cancerous kidney, in January of 2006 we got the news that my nephew Chris, had died unexpectedly. That did it, grief and heartbreak filled her heart. A follow-up checkup found the cancer had spread to her liver, and nothing could be done. I held her hand as she slipped away that morning with a smile on her face after she said..."I'm comin' Mama". I love you mama and someday I will get to meet you again, too.
She is also survived by many Grandchildren and Greatchildren. She was preceded in death by her mother Jewel, her sister Shirley and many other relatives. Earlier in 2006 she was present for the burial of her first born Grandson Christopher James Sandbo. She died knowing that she would see him and her mother soon, and that gave her peace.
I found out later that she was most concerned about how I would handle her death, since I was the baby, and refused to cry and upset her while she was dying. I took care of her in ways that she cared for me when I was a baby. I promised her if she could stay I would do it forever..... To the end she was my best friend.
