John D Baker was a son of Abednego and Rachel Baker Baker of Lafayette Township, Coshocton County, Ohio. At the age of 19, he enlisted in Company H, 51st Ohio Volunteer Infantry Regiment and served in several of the Tennessee campaigns. His older brother, Isaiah Abednego Baker, also served in the same company, and their father, Abednego was with the 6th Independent Sharpshooters Regiment.

After his honorable discharge from the service, John returned home and married Charlotte Hawk Newell, widow of George W. Newell, on 22 March 1866. George Newell had died in service with Company F, 122nd OVI in Virginia in 1864. George and Charlotte had one son, George Edmund Newell, born 28 August 1862. Charlotte was a daughter of Christina Fowler and her first husband, William Hawk, and a granddaughter of pioneer settlers, Richard and Jane Elson Fowler.

John and Charlotte raised her son George and had seven more children: William Lewis, Edward I, James Riley, Richard M, Benjamin F, Christa Ann, and Ida Bell. For many years, he farmed and worked as a laborer near Plainfield. After 1900, John and Charlotte moved first to Coshocton then to Newcomerstown to be near family. John was active in the GAR and attended several of the local reunions. He died at the home of his son, B. F. Baker on 29 November 1917. The funeral was held with full GAR honors at Plainfield Methodist Church where he was a lifelong member.
