Annie E. Thomas Poole

Birth: Jan. 13, 1865
Death: Sep. 4, 1897

Age 32 Years 7 Months 22 Days. Based on this info her birth date can be calculated to be Jan 13 1865.

It is probable that this grave is of Theophilus' wife Anna Thomas. Anna was born in 1865 and the age and death of this person matches. She is buried near Theophilus which provides evidence for their connection.

They were married 14 Oct 1885. This couple had a double ring ceremony with Isaac Bolt and Elfie Maud McCullough. The Bolt/McCullough Marriage license was recorded just above the Poole/Thomas certificate in the county ledger. Annie's mother Margaret DeWitt Thomas was a sister to Josephine DeWitt McCullough. She is therefore a grand-daughter of Dr. Joel and Rachel Mairs DeWitt.

Theophilus married Stella Sharp Hughes in 1898. Stella had been married previously to a Mr. Hughes.

At the residence of her husband in this city, Saturday morning, September 4th 1897, Annie E. Poole, in the 32nd year of her age. She had been ill about three weeks and for the last week it had been expected that she would recover but at three o'clock last Saturday morning her symptoms became alarming and she lingered only a few hours.

Death is always sad and in this instance it is especially so.

In sickness Mrs. Poole was always ready to help and her natural skill, willingness and experience adapted her for that of a Christian career. She belonged to that large and noble band of followers of whom our master teaches who do not let their "right hand know what their left hand doeth." A trumpet sounding christian did not belong to her and yet to know her was to be impressed with the religion she professed.

Mrs. Poole's kindness was universal. She assisted the needy irrespective of creed or inclination. Her position, in the church and in the social life of Milan, will be hard to fill.

The funeral services were held Sunday afternoon at her late home. The Presbyterian choir sang and after brief sermon, the procession formed and proceeded to the cemetery.

Printed copy was supplied by Sarah Lewis, April 2013.
