A native of New York, William was an early settler in Calhoun County, Illinois. He worked there as a farm laborer before 1860. His younger brother, Harvey C. Hallett, worked as a carpenter in the same county.
William married Matilda Louise "Tilly" Aderton on 06 May 1860 in Calhoun County. They were the parents of 8 children.
At the time of his death, William was 72 years, 1 month and 16 days old. He was survived by his wife, Tilly, who passed away in 1927.
