Civil War Union Brevet Brigadier General. He was a successful manager of an iron furnace in Jackson County, Ohio. At the start of the Civil War he requested permission from Ohio Governor William Dennison to raise a company comprised of individuals who worked in the area furnaces to fight for the Union cause. The company he raised was mustered in as Company E, 27th Ohio Volunteer Infantry, and he was commissioned Captain and commander on August 18, 1861. He would serve with the 27th Ohio through the war, rising to Colonel and commander of the regiment on June 27, 1864, and was honorably mustered out on September 15, 1864. He was brevetted Brigadier General, US Volunteers on March 13, 1865 for "meritorious services during the war". (bio by: Bigwoo)
