Barclay Martin was born 13 June 1756 in Va. the sixth child of Abram and Elizabeth Marshall Martin.Elizabeth was cousin to John Marshall Chief Justice of the Supreme Court. At the time of the Rev. War the family was living at Ninety Six ,Edgefield Co. S.C. All his male siblings served in the war. Before the war he married Rachel Clay,cousin to Henry Clay of Kentucky. Barclay served as a Captain of Calvary under Washington's command.He was promoted to Col.for high courage in battle. After the war he and his brother Matt moved to Tn.,where through grants and purchases ,they held over 5000 acres.In 1809 they built a large brick house which is still standing and is on the National Historical Registry as of 2011.
