FRED HINTZE, WHO SAILED LAKE FOR 55 YEARS, IS DEAD

Capt. Fred Hintze, one of the oldest of Lake Michigan skippers, who had sailed the lake for 55 years in craft ranging from a fishing tug to an excursion steamer, died yesterday in the United States Marine hospital. He was 78 years old. Capt. Hintze continued active until about three months ago when he suffered a fracture of a hip in a fall in his home at 2814 North Maplewood avenue. He called his enterprise the North Shore Steamship Line. It will be carried on by his son, Fred Hintze Jr., and the latter's wife, Marie, first woman to hold a navigator's license on the lake. Capt. Hintze took part in a number of thrilling lake rescues, among them the saving of many survivors of the Eastland disaster. He had eight children, and one of his strict rules was that all children should ride free on his boats. Surviving are his widow, Emma, three daughters, Mrs. Clara Kohne, Mrs. Mary Ubel, Mrs. Marguerite Hall, and four other sons, James, Edward, Alfred, and John. Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Tuesday in the chapel at 3301 Fullerton avenue, with burial in Mount Emblem cemetery.
