Henry A. Knight Jr., 87, of Deane Road, died Sunday morning (8-29-10) at his home surrounded by his loving family. He was born in Coventry, R.I. on May 12, 1923, the son of Henry A. Sr. and Lucy (Harrington) Knight. He grew up in Coventry Center, R.I. on Johnson's Pond where his family owned and operated Knight's Boatyard. He was educated in Coventry Schools and in 1943, he joined the U.S. Army where he served in the European Theater in the Rhineland and Central European campaign with the 605th Tank Destroyer Battalion on the 9th Army attaining the rank of Staff Sergeant. In 1946, he moved to Athens, Ga., where he had various jobs including Game Warden, and Landscaping. He returned to Rhode Island in 1962 where he worked for Electric Boat, and moved to Bernardston in 1970, where he worked for Vermont Yankee, Charles R. Deane Excavating and Kramer Industries, retiring in 1989. He was a lifetime member of the Bernardston Veterans Club, and a former member of the Greenfield Moose Club. He was an avid outdoorsman enjoying hunting and fishing, and all his pets. He is survived by his wife of 36 years, the former Judy Cranson, and three sons: Henry A. III and his wife, Susan, and Charles D. and his wife, Janet, both of West Greenwich, R.I., and Lucas H. and his wife, Rachelle, of Northfield; a brother, Robert of Coventry, R.I.; and a sister, Viola Stroka of Coventry, R.I. He is also survived by his beloved grandchildren: Michelle Petrarca, Christine Davis, Lisa Brianna, Porter and Byron Knight, and great- grandchildren: Joseph Petrarca, Makenzie and Natalie Davis. Many nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by two sisters: Ethel Anthony and Dorothy Vickery. Funeral services will be Saturday (9-4-2010) at 10 a.m. at the United Church of Bernardston. The Rev. Raymond Medeiros, pastor, will officiate. Burial will follow in Center Cemetery, Bernardston, with full military honors. Calling hours will be Friday evening (9-3-2010) from 4 to 7 p.m. at the Kidder Funeral Home, 1 Parker Ave., Northfield. Donations in his memory may be made to either: The Bernardston Fire Department, 4 Church St., Bernardston MA 01337 or the Bernardston Veterans Club, P.O. Box 428, Bernardston MA 01337.
