A 1900 University of Pennsylvania law graduate, he rose steadily in the Camden County, New Jersey law community, serving as assistant prosecutor of the county, then as assistant attorney general of New Jersey. He was elected to the New Jersey legislature, where he served as Speaker of the House in 1918. He was elected to represent New Jersey’s 1st District in the United States House of Representatives in a contest that unseated incumbent Congressman Francis F. Patterson, and served from 1927 to 1959, a span of 32 years. He declined to run in 1957, and his longtime Congressional seat went to future New Jersey Governor William T. Cahill. He practiced law in his native Camden, where he died in 1969. (bio by: Russ Dodge)
