Mattie Hightower, age 74 of Leon County, Texas filed a widow's application for pension on 16 April 1922. The pension was approved effective 1 March 1922 (No 38170) She stated that she and GW Hightower married on 6 June 1869 in Pike County, Alabama. He served about two years as a Private in the military service of the Confederate States during the War between the States, Company I, 36th Regiment, Infantry. DL Palmer and CO Simms were her witnesses who swore they knew her personally and she had not remarried since his death. The State and County Assessor certified she was charged on the tax rolls with the property valued at $285.
An application for Mortuary Warrant of 13 December 1924, noted the pensioner Martha Hightower died on 3 December 1924 in Normangee at the home of her nephew, Wiley Mansel. Apparently Wiley Mansel was paid the Mortuary Warrant and misplaced the check, because on 20 January 1925 in Leon County, he filed a claim requesting replacement of a $65 check which had been lost or destroyed. On 22 January 1925, SH Terrell, Comptroller, approved the replacement check.
