On April 14, 1918, he and fellow pilot Alan Winslow of the 94th Aero Squadron each intercepted and downed an enemy aircraft to become the first American-trained pilots to earn air combat victories in WW1. On May 31, 1918 he earned his fifth air combat victory and became the first American-trained "ace" of the war. He later was a very successful businessman in New York.
