THE HENRY BULLETIN, Martinsville, Va., Tue., March 6, 1934, p. 2, col. 3 [edited].
The Irisburg section of Henry County lost one of its most respected and lifelong citizens and farmers Thursday night in the passing of Gay Thomas Eggleston, 66, whose death occurred at a local hospital following several weeks illness. Death was due to a complication of diseases. He had been in declining health for the past year, but had continued his active duties on his farm, despite his condition, until recently.
The deceased spent his entire life in the southeastern section of the county where he was respected and held in high esteem by everyone who came to know him.
He was a member of the Beckham Methodist Church. In his young manhood he was interested in sports and regarded as an outstanding baseball player in the county.
Funeral services were held from the late residence near Irisburg Saturday afternoon. The remains were then interred in the family burial plot behind the home. (His coffin was placed on his wagon and his team of horses pulled the wagon in a pouring rain back to the cemetery for burial.) Surviving is his wife and one son, T. J. Eggleston of Martinsville. One brother, Edward Eggleston, Ridgeway and several sisters, Mesdames Obie Minter, T.D. Meador and J. L. Gravely also remain.
