THE HENRY BULLETIN, Martinsville, Va., Fri., Jan. 4, 1918, p. 1, col. 3:
Woodson Bassett was born July 25th, 1820 and died Dec. 22, 1917.
He was married twice, first to Miss Julia A. F. Prunty, Feb. 14, 1850, second to Miss Mary E. Price Jan. 7, 1858. She died Nov. 12, 1913.
He went to Missouri, Monroe County, in the year 1840, and remained seven years.
In the meantime he entered the service of the U. S. on the 15th of July 1846; was a corporal in Company A, 2nd Regiment Missouri Mounted Volunteers. This company was commanded by Capt. Nap B. Giddings and Regiment of Col. Sterling Price. He was discharged at Santa Fe, New Mexico, on the 9th of April, 1847, because of sickness incurred in course of service.
The first Bassett Immigrant to American was an officer in the English Army, coming to this country after the battle of Dunkirk. The Bassett family has been represented in every war in America since that time. Yet as a family they are quiet and peaceable.
Uncle Woodson was noted for his quiet, stay-at-home qualities, attending strictly to his own business.
He was devoted to his church, attending service regularly until health and strength gave out.
He was considered one of the best farmers in the community and here too he held on till health gave ways when his younger son took charge.
Dear Uncle Woodson: Lifes' long and arduous toils ended, Sweet be thy rest.
