|Birth: ||Feb. 12, 1788|
|Death: ||May 17, 1875|
Son of Elihu Smead and Eunice ____ Smead. This is according to his death record. The only possible candidate for his father is Elihu Smead (1765-1840). But this Elihu married Mercy Bardwell in 1787. And they later had another child named Elihu in 1796. A descendant relates that his parents are Elihu Smead and Eunice Brooks, and that the likely scenario is that Elihu Jr was an illegitimate child, born to Eunice shortly after Elihu Sr had married another woman. Indeed, Eunice never married, and is buried next to Elihu and her sister Tamor Brooks Upton, wife of Nathaniel Upton.
Elihu was "adopted" by Daniel Smith and Catherine (Bardwell) Smith of Belchertown,MA. Elihu eventually inherited the land in Charlemont from his uncle, Nathaniel Upton. He even named one of his children after Nathaniel, and the Smith name is found among the children as well.
He married Judith Hatch on Feb 12,1812.
