George Abner Burks was the 6th of 16 children born to Henry and Elizabeth (Shields) Burks. His paternal grandparents were Elisha & Patience (Dunston) Burks. Elisha was the son of William Burks Sr and Patience was the daughter of William Dunston, a Revolutionary Soldier from NC, and his wife Frances Bibbie Burks. His maternal grandfather is believed to be Moses Shields who died about 1842 in Spartanburg Co SC. A brother of his mother is believed to be Henry Wells Shields.
His siblings were Patience Burks Odum, Tillman Franklin Burks, Matilda Burks Ward, (Female) Burks, Christopher Columbus Burks, Josiah Burks, Rachel Burks Willis, Mariah J Burks Burks, Elizabeth Burks Dearing, Sarah Burks Dunson, Joseph Burks, John H Burks, David A Burks, Martha J Burks Wright, and William Jackson Burks.
Abner married Nancy E Mobley on 4 Jan 1849 in Henry Co, GA. They were the parents of William Henry Burks, John David Burks, Alara E Burks Adamson, Immanuel M Burks, Frances Adella Burks Adamson, and Noah C Burks.
Military: Abner Burks, private, Co E, 55th GA Infantry. Volunteered 1 May 1862 in Atlanta. Abner Burks, Pvt Co E 56th Reg GA, appears on a register of 1st Mississippi CSA Hospital, Jackson, Mississippi. Complaint - Pneumonia, admitted - 24 Jan 1863, sent to General Hospital 14 Feb 1863, Remarks - Vaccinated Newton Station, signed - J Funk. Muster Roll of 31 Oct 1863 shows him absent with the comment "Deranged and left at Vicksburg 12 July 1863."
On 22 Sept 1863, Nancy E Burk filed a claim with the CSA War Dept for Abner's "death" at Vicksburg, alleged to have occurred on 5 Jul 1863. However, it turned out that he was not deceased, but probably making his way home. Family lore gives that he walked from Vicksburg to Stockbridge GA.

It appears from the Muster Roll of Cap Alberts Company E, of the 56th Regiment GA Volunteers, on file in this office, that Abner Burks pri of his Company was enlisted Apr 19th 1862, for 3 years and "death not reported".

Clayton Co Confederate Pension Applications, G Abner BURKS, Co E, 56th Reg, Widow Pension, Widow: Mrs Nancy E BURKS. Married 4 Feb 1849, she lived in GA all of life since 1831. From an affidavit. "Abner BURKS was a stout robust man when entering service, strong and healthy. Afterwards, health broken and mind broken or crocked." Died of consumption 31 Dec 1867 in Clayton Co, a result of typhoid fever. "Knew the BURKS family, father, mother, brothers and sisters, of whom there was 14 in family."
