Thomas served in the Mexican War, wherein he was wounded during the battle at Chapultepec Castle in Mexico City, California, decorated for his bravery regarding his actions there and discharged in 1851.

Marriage to Elizabeth Ann "Betty" or "Liza" Chrisman in Salem, Marion, Oregon, USA. Thomas and Elizabeth resided in Brownsville, Linn County, Oregon until 1855 when they moved to Douglas County, Oregon.
Thomas and Elizabeth found living back in Brownsville, Linn County, Oregon, USA.
There is one family account that records that Thomas worked as a supervisor during the construction of the railroad near Ellis, Montana, where he was present for the golden spike ceremony.
