| Birth: | Nov. 13, 1841 | | Death: | Jul. 7, 1913 |  Civil War Union Brevet Brigadier General. Commanded two Civil War regiments in combat during the war despite being less than 24 years of age. After spending time as a Lieutenant in the 3rd New Jersey Volunteer Infantry, and on the staff of Brigadier General George W. Taylor, he was appointed commander of the 23rd New Jersey Volunteer Infantry. He led the unit and was wounded in the confused and ultimately fruitless combat at the Battle of Salem Church, Virginia on May 3, 1863 during the Chancellorsville Campaign. Recovering from his wounds, he became Colonel of the 37th New Jersey Volunteer Infantry. He was brevetted Brigadier General, US Volunteers on March 13, 1865, and later in life served as United States Minister to Spain from 1890 to 1892.
