Vidalia, GA - Dr. Lamar A. Brown, age 93 of Vidalia, died peacefully at his home on Wednesday, November 10, 2010. He was a lifelong resident of Vidalia, a graduate of Vidalia High School, Northern Illinois College of Optometry and was a U.S. Navy Veteran during World War II. He practiced optometry for fifty-six years in Vidalia; where he was active in local, district, state, and national societies, including serving as President of the State Board of Examiners of Optometry for three terms. He and his wife Lessie were the owners of Brown Jewelry in Vidalia for eighteen years. He was a member of the First Baptist Church of Vidalia where he served as a Deacon and President of the Men's Bible Class, and served on the Board of Directors for the Georgia Baptist Children's Home. He was Past President of the Vidalia Kiwanis Club, and also served as Lieutenant Governor of the district. He was a member and past Master of Vidalia Masonic Lodge # 302, and Past District Master. He was a member and Past Patron of Vidalia Eastern Star Chapter and Past Grand Patron of the Georgia Grand Chapter. He was a member of the Scottish Rite, Alee Shrine where he served on the ritualistic team, and served as Boy Scout Master of Vidalia Troop # 933 . In 1959 he was chosen as the Vidalia Citizen of the Year, and was a member of the Sons of the American Revolution. He was preceded in death by his wife, Lessie Mae Brown, a daughter, Linda Sue Brown, and a sister, Dorothy McCorkle. Dr. Brown is survived by two sons, Dr. James Ace Brown and wife Jeanette Spencer Brown of Augusta, and Charles Allen Brown and wife Linda Shurgin Brown of Seneca, South Carolina; two daughters, Le Anne Brown of Gainesville, Florida, and Dr. Lyn Brown Oxley and husband Matthew W. Oxley, Jr. of Vidalia, one sister, Jo Beckham of Vidalia, twelve grandchildren, six great-grandchildren, and several nieces and nephews.
Funeral services will be held Saturday, November 13th at 11:00 am in the Historical Sanctuary of the First Baptist Church of Vidalia with Reverend Bucky Kennedy and Reverend Don Moye officiating. Interment will follow in Pinecrest Cemetery. The family will receive at the funeral home Friday Evening from 6:00 until 8:00. Memorial contributions may be made to the First Baptist Church, P.O.
