Served in World War I in the United States Army as a Captain in Company G, 140th Infantry, 35th Infantry Division, seeing combat and receiving the Purple Heart and the Silver Star. Represented Missouri in the United States House of Representatives for two separate terms, serving from 1920 to 1921, then from 1923 to 1935. Represented the 3rd District in his first term of office, for which he was elected to fill the vacancy caused by the resignation of Congressman Joshua A. Alexander. He was then was re-elected to represent the 3rd District again, serving from 1925 to 1933, when he was elected as an At-Large delegate to Congress.
