| Birth: | unknown | | Death: | unknown | The Morse Memorial was erected in honor of the contributions of of zoologist, anthropologist and museum curator Edward S. Morse to the scientific advancement of Japan. Morse opened a laboratory on Enoshima Island, later taught zoölogy at the Imperial University in Tokyo. During his tenure (1877 to 1880) he introducted modern methods of collecting and classifying objects of natural history. During a train ride between Enoshima and Tokyo, Morse's alert eye detected some shell heaps, previously ignored. His excavation of "Omori Kaizuke," these kitchen-middens with their pre-historic artifacts, was an epoch in the annals of anthropology. (bio by: Warrick L. Barrett)
