| Birth: | Mar. 8, 1900 | | Death: | Jan. 24, 1993 |  Born in London, England the son of Francis Abel Smith and Madeline St. Maur Seymour. He was educated at the Royal Military College at Sandhurst and in 1919 joined the Royal Horse Guards. He served as Aide de Camp to the Earl of Athlone. Between 1928 and 1931 he served as Governor-General of South Africa. In 1931, he married Lady May Cambridge, the daughter of the 1st Earl of Athlone. He was decorated with the Companion, Distinguished Service Order in 1945 and served as Acting Colonel of the Corps of Household Cavalry in 1946. He was invested as a Knight Commander, Royal Victorian Order in 1950, and was invested as a Knight, Most Venerable Order of the Hospital of St. John of Jerusalem in 1958. He held the office of Governor of Queensland between 1958 and 1966 where he proved to be very popular. He was invested as a Knight Commander, Order of St. Michael and St. George in 1961. He was Honorary Air Commodore of the Royal Australian Air Force in 1966. He retired in 1975 to Barton Lodge in Berkshire, England. He died at age 92 at Wellington Lodge in Berkshire, England.
