A Civil War veteran, he was drafted and enrolled in Carlisle August 12, 1863, and assigned to Co. G, 143rd Pennsylvania Infantry, at the rank of private. He lost his left forefinger at the battle of the Wilderness and was honorably discharged with his company June 12, 1865.
Hetty died in 1909, and he married the widow Susan B. Bentz, née Beekley, May 13, 1915, in Dillsburg. In November 1915, he sufered severe injuries when a horse trampled him, but he survived another eight years.
