US Army Brigadier General. Born in St. Augustine, Florida, he graduated third in his class from the United States Military Academy on July 1, 1849. He was noted in US Military history for his progressive development of cartridge cases and primer design, which contributed greatly to the early success of the Gatling gun and other manually operated machine guns.
