Louis Ferree Carothers was the son of James Carothers (1788-1865) and Sarah (Forsythe) Carothers (1789-1874), both of whom were born in Pennsylvania and died in Shelby County, Missouri.

Lewis and all of his siblings and half-siblings were born in Pennsylvania.

In 1836, the Carothers family moved west in a covered wagon to Missouri and first settled in Ralls County, then a year later moved to Shelby County, Missouri where they established a farm about 4 miles northwest of where the town of Shelbina now stands. Louis' parents spent the rest of their lives in this location. Louis' father is buried in the family burying ground on this homestead in Shelby County, Sec. 23, Twp. 57, R. 11. It is unknown if Louis' mother is also buried there.

On February 8, 1844 in Shelby County, Missouri, Louis married Angelica Miller (1822-1871), who was born in Bourbon County, Kentucky, the daughter of Stephen and Elizabeth Miller.

Louis served in the military during the Mexican War in 1846. In 1850, the family was living in Lewis County, Missouri, but by 1860 had moved to Shelby County, Missouri.

During the American Civil War, Louis was a Captain in the Union Army. Afterwords, he returned to his home near Clarence, Shelby County, Missouri, where he and his wife spent the rest of their lives.
