He married Mary E. Howell, September 29, 1897 in Hardin County, Tennessee.
He was an ordained Free Will Baptist preacher. His name can be found on old church records as having preached several years before Oklahoma statehood in 1907. He was a prominent preacher and able debater in central Oklahoma and western Arkansas. He was an acceptable orator. Many were converted under his ministry but the number of churches he organized is unknown. He was editor of a church paper entitled "The Pruning Hook" for a few years.
