Almost a Centenarian

Mrs. Mary F. Northrup, who was born in this town nearly a hundred years ago, died at her home near Allenton last Friday from the infirmaties of extreme age.

Until recently she had been in her accustomed vigor and it was predicted that she would fill out her century of life. But a short time ago she began to fail from the weaknesses of old age and a week ago took to her bed, dying about 2 a.m. in the morning.

Mrs. Northrup was born in Slocumville, Jan 7, 1816, and was the eldest of 10 children, the family of Benjamin Waite Gardiner and Mary Congdon. She was married Sept. 22, 1833, at the age of 17 to George W Northup in Exeter by Elder John Gardiner, and as a bride went to the house she had lived in ever since for 81 years. Her husband died a number of years ago.

She had eight children, of whom six are living. They are Stephen G Northrup of Providence, Mrs Mary F Campbell of Lafayette, George Taylor Northup, who cares for the farm at home, Samuel C Northrup of Providence, Mrs Lydia H Whitford of Davisville, Mrs Susanna N Campbell of Allenton. Mrs Northrup has three sisters living, Mrs. Experience Newcomb of New London, Mrs. Frances Newcomb of Pennsylvania and Mrs. Lydia Northrup of West Wickford. The last named sister is 96 years old in a few days, but is in a precarious state of health. Mrs Northrup's home was near what is called the "Kettle Hole Pond," Allenton, in the house that her husband's great-grandfather built and there surrounded by the farm homes of several branches of the Northrup family she has lived the years of her married life.

The funeral was held at the Allenton Baptist Church, Sunday afternoon the exercises being conducted by Rev Brown E Smith. Mrs Northup was one of the four persons living who remembered Rev William Northrop, the founder of the church in 1782, and who was its pastor for 57 years until his death in 1839. The bearers were four of the grandchildren, James P., Arthur G., Oscar and Leonard S Campbell. Burial was at Elm Grove Cemetery.
