| Birth: | May 18, 1916 | | Death: | Mar. 23, 1987 |  Hall of Fame Professional Hockey Player. Born in Eveleth, Minnesota, he is regarded as the Godfather of Minnesota Hockey. Attending the University of Minnesota, he was a standout for both the hockey and football teams, and was named an All-American in hockey in 1940. After serving in the US Coast Guard during World War II, he played for the Chicago Black Hawks (1945-48), St. Louis Flyers (1949) and St. Paul Saints (1950-52), before retiring. After his pro playing career ended, he became the head coach of the University of Minnesota Golden Gophers Hockey team serving (1952–53, 1965–66), except for the 1956 season, in which he was the head coach of the US Olympic Hockey Team leading them to a Silver Medal at Lake Placid, New York. In 1967, he was named the assistant to general manager for the Minnesota North Stars and held the position with the North Stars until his death in 1987. He was inducted into the US Hockey Hall of Fame and NHL Hockey Hall of Fame in 1985. (bio by: John "J-Cat" Griffith)
