Joseph J. Carter Sr. GREENLAND - Joseph "J.J." Carter Sr., 67, died Tuesday, Nov. 2, 2010, at his home, surrounded by his family, after a long and courageous battle with cancer.

Born Jan. 9, 1943, in Portsmouth, he was the son of the late Kenneth Sr. and Catherine (Mayers) Carter. He served in the U.S. Navy after high school.

Survivors include his wife of 43 years, Barbara (Muder) Carter; his children, Fred Carter and wife Sue of Eliot, Maine, Joseph Carter Jr. and wife Shelly of Eliot, Jodi Sargent and husband Darrin of South Berwick, Maine, Jennifer Carter and companion Jason Smith of Newington; grandchildren Brandon, Tony and Cassidy Carter, Ashlin, Abigail and Katherine Sargent, and Andrew, Brady and Emma Carter; great-grandson Rowan Carter; brother Kenneth Carter Jr. and wife Debbie of Randolph, Mass.; sister Kim Carter of Newmarket; and aunt Joyce Cavanaugh and husband Bill of Salem.

WE REMEMBER: He was a very generous man who work hard running his own business and enjoyed time with his family. He was a devoted husband, father, papa and friend.

SERVICES: Visiting hours will be held from 2 to 5 p.m. Sunday, Nov. 7, at Farrell Funeral Home, 684 State St., Portsmouth. A graveside service will be held at 11 a.m. Monday, Nov. 8, at Central Cemetery in Rye. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the American Cancer Society of New Hampshire, 2 Commerce Drive, Bedford, NH 03110-6803; www.cancer.org.
