Last Rites conducted for Mrs. Ernest Thayer – Widely known and beloved pioneer is laid to her rest in the Wolbach Cemetery Saturday. – The funeral of Mrs. Ernest H. Thayer, one of the best known and oldest residents of Greeley county who died at the home of her daughter last Thursday, were conducted Saturday afternoon at 2:30 from the Wolbach Methodist church with the pastor, Rev. G. M. Bing officiating. A short service was held at the house at 1:30. At the church appropriate hymns were sung by Methodist's ladies' choir accompanied by Mrs. Adams at the piano. Interment was in the Wolbach cemetery under direction of McIntyre's Funeral Service. Effie L. Merchant was born in Jefferson County, New York, on the 24th day of October, 1868, and departed this life at the home of her daughter, Mrs. Henry Kraft, in Greeley County, Nebr., the 28th day of September, 1939 at the age of 70 years, 11 months and 4 days. When she was 11 years of age she moved with her parents to Greeley County, where she, in early life, was baptized in the Methodist Church. On May 11, 1888 she was united in marriage with Ernest H. Thayer, and to them were born six children: Perry, Ernest, Mrs. LaVina Kraft, Bert, Mrs. Effie Nelson and Clarence, all living in Greeley County. Besides her children she leaves to mourn her passing, two sisters, Mrs. LaVina Phelan, and Mrs. Jennie Haven, of Spalding; three brothers, Alfred Merchant of Bellingham, Washington; Jacob Merchant of Centerville, Iowa; and Dan Merchant of Spalding; besides seven grandchildren. Mr. Thayer passed away July 13, 1933. It hardly need be emphasized that she also left a great many neighbors and friends who will greatly miss this fine pioneer, who has answered the last roll call. All too swiftly the shuttle of time in speeding back and forth, finishing the earthly careers of our early settlers, and Mrs. Thayer, among them will leave a vacant space which will be hard to fill. Pallbearers were Ash Marco, Chris Borre, Gus Hold, A. H. Studley, George Studley and Everett Watts.
