Funeral services for Richard Carl Lewis, who died Thursday morning when fire destroyed the home of his parents in the New Hope community, were held Friday afternoon at 2 o'clock at the graveside in the Rock Hill Cemetery.
The services were conducted by the Rev. C.N. Tunnel of Brownsboro.
The Hassell & Foster funeral Home was in charge of arrangements.
The baby was born on February 27, 1948 in Athens.
Surviving are his parents, Mr. and Mrs. Elder Carl Lewis, New Hope; grandparents, Mr. and Mrs. Elmer Hopson and Mr. and Mrs. O.R. Lewis of route 1 Chandler.
Sheriff Dean Holiman said that efforts to rescue the baby from a flame filled bedroom were futile.
The family, the sheriff said, had just finished breakfast and Mr. Lewis was attending to chores about the place. Mrs. Lewis, who was in the kitchen washing dishes, opened the bedroom door and flames burst from it.
Mr. and Mrs. Lewis attempted to enter through the door and the windows, but were unable to reach the baby before the house was engulfed in flames. The house was destroyed.
Sheriff Holiman was accompanied to the home by Dr. D. Price, city-county Health Officer.
