He achieved fame, and won a supporting-acting Oscar, at the age of 71 by portraying crusty law school professor 'Professor Kingsfield' in "Paper Chase" and subsequent television series. He was co-founder of Mercury Theater with Orson Wells in 1937. Almost every major theater in America is run by a Houseman protege, according to director James Bridges, who cast Mr. Housemen, his mentor, as Professor Kingsfield in the film "The Paper Chase."
