Major League Baseball Player, Manager, Coach. For seven seasons (1944 to 1948, 1951 to 1953), he was a pitcher with the Brooklyn Dodgers and Cincinnati Reds. Born Clyde Edward King, he attended the University of North Carolina (where he excelled in baseball and basketball), before signing as an amateur free agent by Brooklyn in 1944; he made his Major League debut with them on June 21st, 1944, and pitched in 14 games that season, posting a 2 win 1 loss record with a 3.09 ERA. Primarily a reliever during his career, he recorded 6 victories with a 2.77 ERA in 29 appearances during the 1947 season, with the Dodgers' squad who won the National League Pennant that year. In 1948, King struggled with an elevated ERA, and spent the next two years in the Minor Leagues. He returned to the Dodgers' big league club in 1951, and produced his best year, as he notched 14 wins in 48 games pitched. He appeared in 23 games with the Dodgers' team that captured the National League Pennant in 1952, and concluded his Major League playing career with Cincinnati in 1953. In 200 career regular season games, he compiled a 32 win 25 loss record, with a 4.14 lifetime ERA, in 496 innings pitched. He served stints on the Reds' (1959) and Pittsburgh Pirates' (1965 to 1967) coaching staffs, before succeeding Herman Franks as manager of the San Francisco Giants (1969 to 1970) in 1969; he guided them to a 90 win 72 loss record that season and a second place finish behind Atlanta in the National League Western Division. Other managerial assignments include the Atlanta Braves (1974 to 1975) and New York Yankees (1982). King compiled a 234 win 229 loss record as a manager. He served three separate occasions on the Yankees coaching staff (1978 for Bob Lemon with the Yankees' squad that won the World Series, 1982 and 1988). In addition, he served as Yankees' general manager from 1985 to 1986, and special assistant to the general manager from 1998 to 2005. He was inducted into the North Carolina Sports Hall of Fame in 1983. He died from a variety of health problems. (bio by: C.S.)
