|Death: ||Nov. 23, 1778|
John, with wife Sarah and daughter Mary signed the Orange Co. Importation books in 1740.
His 1st wife was Sarah Waite daughter of James Waite and Catherine Rothgab.
His 2nd wife was Esther (Waite) Taylor widow of John Taylor and daughter of James Waite and Catherine Rothgab (Sarah's sister)
There were 4 other Stephenson's that settled in Rockingham Co. at this same time and all appear to have been brothers of John. They were Thomas, William, Robert, and David.
The first church at this location was the Peaked Mountain Presbyterian Church founded in 1743. John Stephenson was one of several people that requested and funded the church. The Rev. John Hindman was assigned to this church and may have been the first to preach at this location. The church had a stone veneer in 1748 when a county road order referred to it as "The Stone Church". This has confused many to think it was a reference to the Old Augusta Stone Church at Ft. Defiance. The descendant of this church is now known as the Massanutten Presbyterian Church and is located 3 miles north of this location.
