His father gave him a slave when he was a boy to help look after him as he was crippled.
He lived on his fathers' farm all of his life and raised his family there. The farm was 4 miles SE of Stoneville, N.C.

Samuel was a school teacher and a postmaster, operating a post office out of his home known as Douglas Post Office.(1870s-1890s).
