James Starr was the son of Rev. Ebenezer Rhodes. Ebenezer Rhodes was born on May 21, 1780 and died on Dec 6, 1842. James' mother was Mary Starr, born in June of 1768 and died Aug 19, 1864.

Rev Dr. James Starr Rhodes came to Iowa from Illinois in 1855. He had churches in Winterset and Commerce, Iowa. He married Eliza Ann Frances Adams on September 28 1837 in Bloomington, Illinois.

They had nine children, to wit:

1 Pleasant Marion, known as "PM".
Born Nov 10, 1838 in Illinois. Married April 1860 to Mary Elizabeth Clark, born Oct 28 1842, died Jan 21 1904. They had 8 children. "PM" died Oct 25, 1917 in Noesho Falls, Kansas.

2 Permalia Jane, known as "Jane".
Born Sept 4, 1840 in Illinois. Married August 25, 1858 in Madison County Iowa, to William Henry Kiser, born Jan 8, 1837, died Aug 14, 1922, buried in Colfax Iowa. They moved to Colfax in 1890. They had 9 children. Jane died Oct 8, 1899. Buried in Colfax Iowa.

3 Mary Matilda, known as "Tildie".
Born Apr 24, 1842, died Dec 20, 1928. Buried at the Vineland Cemetery, Clarkston, Washington. She was married on Feb 28, 1866 to Benjamin Franklin Jacks, known as "Frank". He born Aug 9, 1839 in Gallio Co. Ohio. Frank served 3 years in Company A, 50th Illinois Infantry (1861-1864). He died Sept 27, 1924. He was buried in Vineland Cemetery in Clarkston, Wash. Frank was the son of Solomon Jacks.

5 James Thompson, known as "Thomps".
Born on Oct 16, 1847 in Illinois and died Mar 6, 1927. He is buried at Riverside Cemetery in Spokane, Washington. Married Mary Ann Elizabeth Miller on Jan 9 or Jan 30 in 1871 in Polk Co., Iowa. "Mate", as his wife was called was born on Feb 27, 1850 and died May 24, 1930 in Orilla, Ia. They had 10 children.

6 Margaret Ann
Born Jul 25, 1848 in Illinois and died Aug 4, 1848 just 10 days old.

7 Lucinda, known as "Liz" or "Lu" but she adopted the middle name of Belle and called herself Lucinda Belle. Born on Jan 9 1852 in Illinois and died Feb 29, 1896. She is buried in Hooten cemetery near Winterset, Ia. She was married on Apr 10, 1869 in Polk Co., Ia. to William Henry Bertholf. He was born Feb 2, 1842 and died in 1914. He is buried with Lucinda in Hooten cemetery. They had 5 children.

8 William Cyrus, known as "Will" or "Uncle Billy". Born Sep 15, 1853 in Illinois and died Feb 3, 1931. He is buried in the Winterset, Ia., town cemetery. He was married on Apr 27, 1875 to Mary Elizabeth Hutton, known as "Minnie". She was the daughter of Joseph W Hutton and Irene Cooley. Minnie was born Aug 6, 1856 in Indiana and died on Jun 27, 1934. They had 13 children.

9 Martha Frances, known as "Mattie" or "Frankie". The youngest child of James and Eliza Rhodes was born on Jul 2, 1856 and died on Jan 6, 1945 in Mercy Hospital in Des Moines, Ia. She is buried at Glendale Cemetery. Mattie married Nelson "Nils" Soderlund on May 29, 1875. Nils came to America at the age of 3 from Bollnas, Sweden. He died on Apr 29, 1919 and is buried in the Glendale Cemetery near his wife Martha Frances.

Note: Since the three sons of this family married women with the same name of Mary Elizabeth, the monikers, Lib, Mate and Minnie were adopted to disinguish one from the other...
