James (1886-1979) Tillotson is the son of Sarah Jane Lamb (July 1866-Jan 1920) Tillotson and James Tillotson (1853-1920). There was a few different spellings for Tillotson, Telliotson, and Tillson, mostly it was Tillotson. I figured it was just mis spelled as is often seen. The family members and dates would be the same.
His siblings are: Bert A. Tillotson (April 1883-), Bertha M. Tillotson (June 1885-), Elizabeth J. Tillotson (November 1887-) Skiver (Wesley J. Skiver), Charolette L Tillotson (1893-1894), George Tillotson December 1894-)and Lillian A. Tillotson (1905-1906).
His marriages were confusing. For the year he is born I see only one James Tillotson living in Portville (1886) and took it as he married three times. This is how I figured it happenened.
He first married Erma Blanch Morris Tillotson (1891-1919) on Sept 30, 1908 (Family Search-Marriages). Erma was omly 17 yrs old . James and Erma had two daughters, Olga (1910-) Tillotson Johnson and Evelyn ((1912-) Tillotson Sirmon, both of Niagara Falls, NY. (James was a widow by the 1920 census)the girls lived with their father and grandparents.
Erma remaried to John B. Parenteaw from 1918 and then died in 1919. She was buried under the Erma Tillotson name.
Eighteen years later (Portville Review 4/19, 1945), there is an obit listing for an Anna Swager (12/14/1882- 4/14/1945) Ayers Tillotson stating she married James Tillotson on 1/20/1926. He had two step sons by Anna: Francis and Nathan Ayers. Staff Sergeant, Francis H. Ayers died in a bomer crash in 1943 during WWII. Plus, Nathan D. Aryers, was in the war as a command pilot.
Then about four years later, there was a news article (Portville paper 12/1/1949) were he married Eathel (Hinman) Bell, Tillotson on Wed. November 24, 1949.
Daughter, Evelyn is buried next to James. He died at Devaux Manor in Niagara Falls. (Cherie Officer) Erma is buried in Chestnut Hill Cemetery, Portville. Anna is buried in Pleasant Valley Cemetery, Olean, under the Ayers name. Eathel is buried with her 1st husband Joseph Bell, under the name Bell, not Tillotson, Chestnut Hill Cemetery. The grave and stone may have been already purchased and it was left that way or they may have divorced.
James lived at 60 Temple St. in Portville. (Cherie Officer)
James was the Supervisor of Chestnut Hill Cemetery from 1931-1959. A memorial at the entrance (on left after gate) to Cemetery honors him for his years of service. He was a member of Portville United Methodist Church and Oddfellows Lodge #779. (Cherie) He died Sep. 30, 1979.
