F. M. Echols

F. M. Echols, 82, former Whitewright mayor, died Sunday afternoon in Flo Memorial Hospital, Denton, after an illness of two weeks.

Funeral services were held at the First Methodist Church here at 10 a.m. Tuesday, with Rev. John Robertson, poastor, officiating. Burial was in Restland Memorial Park, Dallas.

Mr. Echols came to Whitewright from Howe in 1913 and purchased The Whitewright Sun from J. H. Waggoner. He had formerly published the newspaper at Howe, the Howe Herald. He operate the Sun for about a year, then sold half interest in the business to J. H. Waggoner and they operated as a partnership for a while before Mr. Echols sold Mr. Waggoner his inteerest in the business. He became manager of the Whitewright Chamber of Commerce, then in April 1916 he was elected mayor when the commission form of government was adopted here. The two city commissioners elected with him appointed him city manager, and he served as mayor and city manager continuously from 1916 until he retired in 1950, a period of 34 years. He suffered a heart attack two or three years before he retired from office, and never fully regained his health after the attack. He and Mrs. Echols moved to Denton last year in order to be near their daughter, Mrs. Joe Brooks.

Mr. Echols was a charter member of the Whitewright Rotary Club, and a member of the Masonic Lodge and the Methodist Church. He served on the board of stewards of the church for many years.

Surviving are his wife; four daughters, Mrs. R. R. McDaniel of Quanah, Mrs. J. E. Montgomery and Mrs. Newton L. Manning of Dallas, and Mrs. Joe Brooks of Denton; six grandchildren and six great-grandchildren.

Served as Editor when living in Howe. Agent of fraternal order in 1910. Mayor of Whitewright for more than 20 years.
