Francis Joseph "Frank" Ford
Original name: Francis Feeney
Birth: Aug. 14, 1881
Cumberland County
Maine, USA
Death: Sep. 5, 1953
Los Angeles
Los Angeles County
California, USA

Director, actor and producer in early Hollywood. Brother of John Ford. After holding a variety of odd jobs in Vaudeville, Francis Feeney, who later changed his last name for Ford, ended up working in the motion pictures with the Edison and Melies studios. In 1910 he landed in Hollywood where, along with Thomas Ince, he made numerous features and shorts. On the basis of his success in producing westerns, he was able to found his own studio. Young John Feeney followed him to Los Angeles in 1914, also changed his name to Ford and learned the craft of filmmaking by working as an apprentice under his then more-famous brother. Virtually none of Francis Ford's inexpensively produced films survive today; he worked very little after 1925. He did, however, have some very minor roles in his brother's movies--as 'Billy,' the drunken stage keeper in 1939's "Stagecoach," and as 'Dad' in 1946's "My Darling Clementine." One of Ford's last roles was as the old man that was lynched in "The Ox-Bow Incident."  (bio by: Joe Costa)
