Andrew Gillen born 1818 in Ireland. At the age of 20 came to America and settled in Pennsylvania and remained there for two years, after which time he moved to Penfield, Greene County Georgia. Sometime in the 1850,s he moved to Oglethorpe County. He was a drainer by trade, having learned that profession in Ireland and while in Greene County drained the lower section of that county for the Boswells and McWhorters.
He was a Catholic when he came to Georgia but afterwards joining the Baptist church. A remarkable thing about his life is that he never entered a courthouse, as he didn't believe in court, thinking it is not right but that everybody should obey the law. He married Elizabeth J. Tuggle in 1852. Their children: Samuel Thomas, Patrick H, Andrew J, Franklin D, Mary B. and Alexander Stephens.
The Gillen's have been connected with the business life of Maxeys and vicinity almost since the formation of the town. Andrew J. was one of the leading merchants up until his death in 1932. He served for a number of years on the county Board of Education.
