Giuseppe Garibaldi
Birth: Jul. 4, 1807
Departement des Alpes-Maritimes
Provence-Alpes-Côte d'Azur, France
Death: Jun. 2, 1882
La Maddalena
Provincia di Olbia-Tempio
Sardegna, Italy

Italian national hero and politician, fighter for the freedom and independence of Italy. Born in Nice and died on the island Caprera near to Sardegna. As a refugee spent he several years in South America, because of the death penalty in Italy for the revolt against monarchy. Garibaldi came during the revolution in 1848 back to Italy. After the death of his wife Anita decided he in 1855 to buy the main part of the island Caprera (between Sardegna an Corsica) to build there his house and to create there his family residence. His granite grave lies, with 6 other graves of members of his family, on the small family cemetery in the park of his residence on the island Caprera. His last will, to be cremated, was not fulfilled, because of the religious and political orientation of the government in Italy in 1882. (bio by: Frantisek Zboray)

How I wish I had been in Teddington in 1864 when you visited our town and spoke to the crowd. The story of your life of struggle and of achievement should be taught in every school. A true hero.
