John was the fourth of six children of Henry Rothrock (1792-1872) and Nancy A. Ramsey Rothrock (1805-1894), who married 26 Sep 1826 at Bellefonte, Centre County, Pennsylvania.

In the Fall of 1858 John moved from his home state of Pennsylvania to Longmont, Boulder County, Colorado where he was a successful miner, rancher, Democrat and Presbyterian. He was one of the first ranchers at Longmont. He was one of the first to discover gold in paying quantities and with three others extracted $100,000 worth in one season. He built the second irrigation ditch constructed in the state in 1859. John married Elizabeth (Eliza) Catherine Buford (1849-1947) on 02 Jan 1867 at Arapahoe County, Colorado. In 1870 the family (parents and two children) were living at Boulder Valley District, Boulder County, Colorado with JOHN listed as a farmer. In 1880 the family (parents and both their sons) were living at Canfield Precinct, Boulder County, Colorado with John listed as a farmer. In 1885 the parents and both sons were living at Buena Vista, Boulder County, Colorado. In 1900 the parents were living alone at Boulder County, Colorado. In 1910 the parents, along with grand-daughters Irma and Thera were living at S.E. Longmont, 33rd Precinct, Boulder County, Colorado. In 1920 the widow Eliza was living with her son William at Boulder County, Colorado. John and Eliza were the parents of two known children, namely:

1. William Henry Rothrock (1867-1955)
2. John Edwin Rothrock (1869-1956)

A biographical book on the life of John Ramsey Rothrock was published "The Heritage and the Legacy of John Ramsey Rothrock, a Colorado Pioneer" by Mary Catherine Romer. The book was published in 1985 and has 137 pages.
