Born in Greeneville, he was a son of the late Benjamin Harrison and Leta McAmis Dobson.
He was preceded in death by a brother, James Dobson.
Mr. Dobson was graduated from Greeneville High School and entered the U.S. Army. He was stationed in England during World War II.
After the war, he enrolled at the University of Tennessee, and after graduation pursued a graduate degree in library science at Columbia University in New York.
He returned to Greeneville where he was librarian at Greeneville High School. Mr. Dobson then accepted a position with the University of Tennessee as librarian of special collections, and retired with emeritus status in 1986.
He was a member of First Presbyterian Church of Greeneville, Greene County Heritage Trust, and the East Tennessee Historical Society.
Mr. Dobson is survived by several cousins.
