Politician. He served as United States Secretary of State from 1977 to 1980 in President Jimmy Carter's Administration. He resigned under protest over the failed attempt to rescue Americans held hostage in Iran. Prior to serving in that position, he was the United States Deputy Secretary of Defense in the Johnson administration. As the 11th Deputy Secretary of Defense, he served 1,249 days as Deputy, the longest tenured deputy to that date. During the Kennedy administration he was Secretary of the Army and General Counsel of the Department of Defense During World War II, he served in the Navy. He earned BA and LLB degrees from Yale University before entering a law private practice. He entered politics in 1957 to work for the United States Senate Committee on Armed Services, which followed with President Kennedy's General Counsel of the Department of Defense. Upon his 1980 resignation, he returned to his private law practice. In 1991, he was named Special Envoy of the Secretary-General of the United Nations for Croatia, and in 1993, he was involved with the United Nations Special Envoy to Bosnia. He received the Presidential Medal of Freedom in 1969 and the United States Military Academy's Sylvanus Thayer Award in 1983. Despite the death date of January 10th on his gravestone, most sources state his death date as January 12th.
