HUNTLEY – Cal Geschke, 85, of Huntley, passed away Sept 27, 2010, at his home in Huntley.
He was born Oct. 10, 1924, to Otto and Ella (Kegler) Geschke. After graduating from Steinmetz High School in 1942, he was drafted into the U.S. Army where he served until 1946. For part of that time, he was attached to the 3rd Army under Gen. George Patton.
After the war, he attended the Institute of Design at IIT and then began his career in graphic design. While working in the Art Department at Sears, he met Elaine Wild and the two were married Feb. 14, 1948. Their son, Clifford, was born in 1953. In 1958, he opened Cal Geschke Studio, which he operated until his retirement in 1983. Over the years, he lived in Chicago, Park Ridge, Crystal Lake and Hemet, Calif., before finally settling in Huntley.
He was a devoted husband and father, and much-loved grandfather. After his family, his passion was for the church. During his retirement, he and his wife organized the group that formed the Bethesda Thrift Store in Crystal Lake. He was active in the Lutheran Church, serving on every board at various times. He put his artistic ability to use creating scenery for church programs and designing signs, posters and cards for various church groups.
He was a quiet, thoughtful man, hard-working and kind, with a good sense of humor. He was well-liked by everyone, especially children. He and his wife were blessed with more than 62 years of marriage. Together, they traveled widely and touched many lives.
He is survived by his wife, Elaine of Huntley; his son, Clifford (Susan) Geschke of Crystal Lake; and his two grandsons, Tim and Paul.
He was preceded in death by his parents; his sister, Lorraine; and his brother, Clarence.
A memorial service will be at 11 a.m. Saturday, Oct. 9, at Trinity Lutheran Church, 11008 N. Church St., Huntley. Entombment will be in Acacia Park Cemetery, Chicago.
Memorial contributions are suggested to Trinity Lutheran Church, Huntley or Immanuel Lutheran Church, Crystal Lake.
