Carl Oscar Carlson known as Oscar, and Josephine, were in their mid twenties when they departed their homeland of Goteburg, Sweden on August 29, 1889. Gertrude, later known as Betty, was two years old at the time of this journey to America. Debarking from the steamer which brought them, along with 100 pounds of baggage, to New York, they then traveled by rail to Nebraska.
Upon reaching their destination, they settled in a section house near Wolbach, Nebraska. Josephine, Having made the travels with child, gave birth to their second child, Nona, in that house on December 19, 1889.
Oscar had been helping to expand the railroad through Wolbach, Greeley, and Ericson when they moved to Timber Creek and into a sod house to work on a ranch. Prior to moving to Summit, the family lived at the Tilleson house, which was east of Wolbach and was made of both sod and wood as was the Steenson's homestead and Nelson's place. At one point, they lived in a dugout a quarter mile northwest of Wolbach, near the railroad track. The front of the house was all that was visible as it was constructed of wood and served as the entry way.
Snakes were known to come in the dugout, and one got in and wrapped itself around a hat.
Shortly after their third daughter Yarda, had been born in a sod house near Wolbach on January 31, 1892, they moved to Summit where the children attended school until the third grade.
Around the turn of the century, they moved to a farm that they had purchased, which was about a half mile southwest of Logan School District 44, nine miles north of Wolbach. They were farming there when Oscar's health began to fail. He was then injured in a fall over a wooden fence, he fractured his ribs and died in his home at the age of 42 on January 2, 1908.
