MELROSE - Eugene J. Barcher , 74, of Pinewoods Avenue, died Thursday at home after a short illness.
Born in Troy, Mr. Barcher lived in Melrose for the past 30 years.
For 41 years, he was a car inspector for the Boston and Maine Railroad, Mechanicville, retiring in 1983.
During World War II, Mr. Barcher served in the South Pacific with the U.S. Army's artillery.
He was a member of the Transportation and Communications International Union.
Mr. Barcher was a communicant of Assumption-St. Paul Roman Catholic Church, Mechanicville.
Survivors include his wife, Helen Malik Barcher , whom he married Oct. 21, 1944; a son, Eugene R. Barcher of Averill Park; a brother, Francis Barcher of Canajoharie; a sister, Beverly Hines of Parksley, Va.; and three grandchildren.
A Mass of Christian burial will be celebrated at 9 a.m. Saturday at Assumption-St. Paul Church, William Street.
Burial will be in St. Joseph's Cemetery, Troy.
