Birth: 1706
Death: Jul. 4, 1770

Elias Boudinot, father of the distinguished Federal Period statesman of the same name, died at age 63 on July 4, 1770, six years before that day or his son would become celebrated in American history. He was also the father of a famous daughter, the poet-patriot Annis Boudinot Stockton, wife of Richard Stockton, a signer of the Declaration of Independence. The elder Boudinot was a silversmith and merchant of Huguenot ancestry. He had lived in Darby, Pennsylvania, before moving to New Jersey, where he resided in Princeton before finally settling in Elizabeth. A widower for the last five years of his life, he was predeceased by his wife, Catharine, who had died in November 1765. His brown sandstone stele, which was erected by "filial Affection", bears the initials of the great New Jersey stonecutter Ebenezer Price, and is noteworthy for its moustachioed soul effigy--a peculiar detail in an era which favored the clean-shaven look. His epitaph proclaims "Here lies an Honest Man".
