Chester L. Robbins, age 91, of Oquawka, Illinois; passed away at Blair House in Burlington, Iowa on October 27, 2010 at 4:40 pm.
He was born August 26, 1919 in Gladstone, Illinois and is the son of Joseph H. and Nancy V. Watson Robbins.
Chet was raised in Gladstone, Illinois and attended school in Biggsville, Illinois.
Chester entered the Army and served in France and Germany during World War II. He was a survivor of Pearl Harbor and earned the Purple Heart in action at Guadal Canal.
Chester married Betty Jean Morris on March 31, 1947 in Gladstone, Illinois. She preceded him on August 16, 1993. After his service to his country, Chet returned to the area and began work at the Iowa Army Ammunitions Plant in Middletown, Iowa. He also farmed in the Gladstone area for a number of years. Chester also was employed at Butler Manufacturing in Galesburg, for a time and lastly worked as a meat cutter for Wilson Foods of Monmouth, until his retirement in 1981.
Chet is a member of the Oquawka United Methodist Church, the Oquawka Fraternal Order of Eagles, and the J.W. Clendenin Post 2301 in Monmouth, Illinois. Chet's favorite hobby was fishing, and in earlier years he loved to hunt, rabbits, squirrels, and mushrooms. Chet loved to garden and was known to give away to his friends and family, most all of what he brought home, or grew in his garden.
Surviving Chester is one daughter, Diana (William) Dutton of Oquawka, IL. Three sons, Rollo (Jan) Robbins and Chris (Charlene) Robbins, both of Biggsville, IL; and Steve (Rhenae) Robbins of Oquawka, Illinois. Nine Grandchildren and Nine Great Grandchildren are surviving. Chester's sister Rosalee (Bill) Sutton survives in Seaside, CA.
He is preceded in death by his parents, wife, two brothers, two sisters, and one granddaughter.
Services: A funeral service will be at 10:30 am Saturday Oct.30, 2010 at Turnbull Funeral Home in Oquawka, Illinois. Interment with military honors will be in the Oquawka Cemetery. Visitation with the family present will be from 6:00 to 8:00 pm on Friday evening at Turnbulls in Oquawka. A memorial fund is being established for either the Oquawka United Methodist Church, the Oquawka Ambulance Service, or the Schlotzhaurer Home.
